Another look at the Cake Walk
It started with a dance. To blow off steam, to feel human again, to assert subversive power in a world stripped of agency. Eventually becoming America’s first cultural export to Europe and popular dance craze, spawning entirely new genera of music, dress, and movement. Expressions like “it’s a piece of cake” and “that takes the cake” entered our lexicon. For over fifty years this performance captured the American and European imagination. Today we know it as a game for school fundraisers.
How does cultural amnesia happen and what can we learn by taking another look with a 21st century perspective?
