Be Hear Now is a four-week workshop series dedicated to the art of listening. We’ll discuss and engage in using sounds and listening as a mindfulness practice, an art practice, and a tool for ecological study. Sessions will include discussion, listening to recorded works, and hands-on practice or fieldwork. Suggestions for activities or readings between sessions will be offered but not required. A workbook for reflection and field notes will be provided, as well as links to supplemental readings, helpful websites, and suggestions for further study.

Jess Speer is an artist, librarian, and relaxing lady. Her work, including field recordings, papercut collage, performance, zines, and installations, touches on questions of ecology, community, history, mortality, and memory. Jess and her husband Peter perform under the name The Speers, primarily creating live
improvisations with their library of LPs and modular synthesizers to find the hypnotic patterns hidden in ordinary sounds.
