Suspiria (1977)
dir. Dario Argento
A young woman comes to Germany to attend a world-famous ballet school and quickly falls into a world of mysterious disappearances, murders, cover-ups, and...witches. With its intense score (from prog rock group The Goblin), gorgeously lush visuals, and super splashy death scenes, it's a beautiful nightmare filled with elements of dark fairy stories that has inspired horror movies ever since. Italian director Argento created one of the most iconic horror movies in the canon, so come and see it on the big screen. There's no better time, since it's being remade by director Luca Guadagnino (with Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton + a score by Thom Yorke).
Worried that you don't like horror movies and maybe you shouldn't come? Don't be. It's not really that scary.

Ali McGhee received her PhD in Romantic literature from the University of Rochester in 2015 and coped with the pressures of academia by watching as many horror movies as possible. She taught classes on the horror film at Warren Wilson College so she could watch more of them and force other people to, too. She has lots of interesting things to say about them as a result, and Suspiria is her favorite, hands-down. She currently works as a Multimedia Producer for AVLtoday and is an editor for Holler. She teaches yoga at Pure Yoga Asheville and feels like that's totally not at odds with her love for gruesome things.
